There are now two massive mines proposed for the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness!

Posted by: editor on 08/30/11
As if the Rock Creek Mine was not bad enough, a second mining company, Mines Management, wants the ore beneath the wilderness.
The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness is facing a lethal threat from a second massive mine proposal. The Montanore Mine proposes to blast into the wilderness from the northeast, while the Rock Creek mine would undermine the wilderness from the southwest. These two mines would operate within a mile of each other. One mine would significantly impact the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, pollute streams and lakes, and displace grizzly bears from their habitat. Two mines would transform the wilderness into an industrial zone, pollute numerous bull trout streams in both the Clark Fork and Kootenai River drainages. The grizzly bears would be gone.

The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness has been protected from the impacts of the Rock Creek Mine because of successful legal challenges. The Montanore Mine is currently deeply engaged in the permitting process and will likely receive an endirsement from the agencies. It is up to us to stop the mining of one of this nations premier wilderness areas.

Stay with The Rock Creek Alliance for updates on the Rock Creek mine. Visit our friends at Alternative One and Save Our Cabinets for information on the Montanore Mine.
