About Rock Creek AllianceThe Rock Creek Alliance is a small, nonprofit organization with offices in western Montana and the panhandle of northern Idaho. Established in 1996, the organization works to protect the water quality of the Clark Fork-Pend Oreille Watershed and the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area from the proposed Rock Creek Mine. Membership is diverse, representing a broad cross-section of political and economic interests, and includes property owners, business owners, sports people, recreational enthusiasts, conservationists, and individual citizens concerned about clean water and the health of their local communities. Our staff includes Mary Crowe Costello, Executive Director and Jim Costello, Montana Field Director and Outreach and Communications Coordinator. Both work tirelessly on all aspects of mine opposition. Mary is a cofounder of the organization. She has a B.S. in Conservation Biology from Kent State University and an M.S. in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University. She has worked professionally in the field of avian ecology in both Florida and Montana. Mary is an avid hiker and birder. She currently serves on the board of River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary of Spokane, WA. Jim worked in the agricultural field for over 25 years, and was employed as farm manager for a large tree nursery and farming operation in Sanders County, Montana. He served eight years as a volunteer firefighter in rural western Montana. He has been involved in the environmental community for a number of years, and has served as an active volunteer for the Rock Creek Alliance. Jim majored in physical education at the University of Montana and has a degree in sociology from Flathead Valley College. Jim’s passions include hiking and backpacking. The work of the Rock Creek Alliance focuses on education and outreach activities. Staff give presentations, create educational materials, organize community events, and attend meetings on behalf of the organization. Reviewing technical and legal documents is also an important component of the organization’s work. Litigation on behalf of the Rock Creek Alliance is conducted by dedicated attorneys, several of whom are nonprofit, and is crucial in preventing construction activities from commencing as state and federal permits and approvals have been issued. With the support of our members and communities, we have managed to hold off this proposal. We are committed to continue fighting as long as needed. Unfortunately, mining companies have much deeper pockets than we do, and our legal costs will mount. You can help by adding your name and those of your friends to our roster. The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area and Lake Pend Oreille are national treasures that belong to all of us and to generations to come. |
