Recreational Opportunities

The recreational opportunities offered by the Cabinet Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille are unparalleled and have recently been receiving a lot of national media attention.  Due to the extraordinary resources, Outside Magazine recently named Sandpoint one of the best towns in the country and Sunset Magazine declared it the best small town in the west.

The Cabinet Mountains offer endless trails for hiking to pristine wilderness lands and breathtaking alpine lakes.

You could spend a lifetime exploring the region, and the serenity is food for the soul.  Backpackers, hunters, fishermen, wildlife watchers, and horse enthusiasts also take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy this magical wilderness.

Downstream is Idaho's largest lake, Lake Pend Oreille.  The lake sports a world-class fishery, with records set for kokanee, rainbow trout, and lake trout.  Due to its wild scenic beauty and miles of undeveloped shoreline, the lake is renowned by kayakers and boaters.

The Rock Creek Alliance is working hard to ensure that these national treasurers are preserved for all to enjoy.
