Protecting Our Natural Resources
The Rock Creek Alliance is dedicated to protecting one of the
most spectacular wilderness areas in the country, the Cabinet
Mountains Wilderness Area, and the water quality of the Clark
Fork-Lake Pend Oreille watershed. Our natural resources,
in the northern panhandle of Idaho and northwestern Montana,
provide exceptional recreational opportunities, support
thriving communities on the lakeshore, boast a clean
watershed, and also provide important habitat for fish and
wildlife. Crowned by rocky peaks rising from deep glacial valleys, the
Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area is 93,000 acres of wild and protected land.

Idaho's gem, Lake Pend Oreille, is the driving force of the economies of the communities surrounding the lake. One of those communities, Sandpoint, was named the best small town in the west recently by Sunset Magazine. The lake is renowned for its world class fishery and by kayakers and boaters who can explores miles and miles of scenic and undeveloped shoreline.
The proposed Rock Creek mine would be located adjacent to and
underneath this spectacular area. The wilderness area
offers unparalleled recreational opportunities for hikers;
backpackers; horse riders; and those who wish to hunt, fish,
or simply view the wildlife. This wilderness area is
also home to one of the last remaining grizzly bear
populations in the lower 48 states; to the threatened species
of bull trout; and to lynx, mountain goat and harlequin
duck.
