More About Us
Our single mission is to protect our resources and our way of life by stopping the development of the proposed Rock Creek mine adjacent to and underneath the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area. While we support mining that is done in a responsible way, there are certain places where mining is simply inappropriate. The Rock Creek mine would be the first mine built beneath a protected wilderness area. This large-scale mine's devastating impacts to a unique national treasure make it a poster child for irresponsible mining.
In fact, in March 2004, the renowned jeweler, Tiffany &
Co., took out a 3/4-page ad in the Washington Post objecting
to the Rock Creek mine, recognizing that the Cabinet Mountains
Wilderness Area is not an appropriate place for a mine.
An important part of the Alliance's goals is to empower our local communities which have the right to say no to be able to protect the quality of life and natural resources that make this area unique.
The Rock Creek Alliance has been the lead organization in the Rock Creek mine campaign for the past eight years, spearheading public outreach and educational efforts; addressing scientific, technical, and legal aspects of the proposal; and working with key decisionmakers and agency officials.
The Alliance is proud to have nearly 1000 individual
members; over 100 business members; and the support of many
local, regional, and national groups including National Trout
Unlimited and Earthworks.
You, too, can join the ranks to protect our water quality and an incredible wilderness area for generations to come!
